Late author Zecharia Sitchin introduced the most controversial hypothesis that humanity did not evolve by itself but was genetically improvised by the intelligent species (Anunnaki) that came to Earth from another planet, located somewhere in the solar system. According to ancient Sumerians (or Sitchin if you prefer), this planet is called Nibiru which is believed to enter and leave our solar system in cycles of 3,600 years.
Nibiru is the name of a celestial body of Babylonian mythology. According to their mythology, Nibiru was a mighty celestial object associated with the God Marduk. Nibiru means the “planet of the crossing.” In many Babylonian texts, it is identified with the planet Jupiter, although on tablet 5 of the Enûma Elish it is associated with the polar star. Currently, there are weird conspiracies that discuss the collision of Nibiru with Earth in the future and how massive it is.
It is believed that Nibiru was once a wandering planet and got attracted by the pull of the newly formed solar system billions of years ago. Around that time, planet Earth (referred to by the Sumerians as Tiamat) was a larger, watery planet that revolved around the Sun in an orbit farther out in the solar system, between Mars and Jupiter.

During one of the early crossings of Nibiru, a moon orbiting Nibiru collided with Tiamat. That collision was said to have not only broken Tiamat in two pieces, but ultimately pushed the fractured planet, with what was left to become its moon, into a new orbit around the Sun. In its brand new orbit, Tiamat became the Earth and the Moon we know today. Sitchin further noted that if the debris left behind by the cosmic collision was not absorbed by the exoplanets, it was either scattered in the vacuum of space or became the Asteroid Belt.
Nibiru is mentioned and described in detail in the fifth tablet of the Enuma Elish as translated by Sitchin. Nibiru as a planet is mentioned in the work of controversial author Zecharia Sitchin which has gathered much attention among ufologists, conspiracy theorists, and ancient astronaut theories.
However, Sitchin’s work regarding Nibiru lies mostly in the astronomical interpretation of the Enuma Elish, an ancient creation myth. Sitchin replaced the names of Gods with planets. Not many people appreciated Sitchin’s works because the evidence he provided lies in his own translations and not on scholarly agreed interpretations.
Let us not ignore that the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians similarly mentioned this mystical planet which, according to them, devastates Earth every time it passes by. If so, can this planet be accountable for the Earth’s alleged cosmic collision, and can such an event be supported scientifically?
Scientifically speaking, many astronomers are firmly convinced that our solar system has more planets that remain undiscovered, beyond the orbit of Neptune. One of those planets, referred to as Planet X, is believed to be a massive planet, much larger than Earth.
According to NASA, “Caltech (California Institute of Technology) researchers have found mathematical evidence suggesting there may be a “Planet X” deep in the solar system. This hypothetical Neptune-sized planet orbits our Sun in a highly elongated orbit far beyond Pluto. The object, which the researchers have nicknamed ‘Planet Nine,’ could have a mass about 10 times that of Earth and orbit about 20 times farther from the Sun on average than Neptune. It may take between 10,000 and 20,000 Earth years to make one full orbit around the Sun.”
In fact, in 1987, an article in “The New Illustrated Science and Invention Encyclopedia
Furthermore, according to a team of researchers from Caltech, the unusual tilt of the Sun could be attributed to this massive, undiscovered planet that is lurking at the edge of our Solar System.
So, if Planet X is gradually turning out to be real, what about Sitchin’s claim that the Earth, at one point, may have revolved around the Sun between Mars and Jupiter? Does such a claim have any basis?
Sitchin concluded that Nibiru is a massive planet with an extremely elliptic orbit around our Sun. Nibiru is said to have an orbital period of around 2,700 years, and Sitchin claims that Nibiru was the home, or still is, of the ancient Anunnaki, who allegedly came to Earth in search of gold to repair the damaged atmosphere of Nibiru.
Based on numerous simulations and perturbances present in the orbits of dwarf planets in our solar system, experts believe a vast alien world, which is ten times more that the mass of Earth, is located beyond the orbit of Pluto.
There are some curious quotes from several ancient and modern scientists and even the Bible regarding Planet X and the catastrophes it brought to Earth.
Quote from Pomponius Mela, a Latin author of the first century:
“The Egyptians pride themselves on being the most ancient people in the world. In their authentic annals … one may read that since they have been in existence, the course of the stars has changed direction four times and that the sun has set twice in that part of the sky where it rises today.”
“In the second book of his history, Herodotus relates his conversations with Egyptian priests on his visit to Egypt sometime during the second half of the fifth century before the present era. Concluding that history of their people, the priests told him that the period following their first king covered three hundred and forty-one generations, and Herodotus calculated that three generations being equal to a century, the whole period was over eleven thousand years. The priests asserted that within historical ages and since Egypt became a kingdom, ’four times in this period (so they told me) the sun rose contrary to his wont; twice he rose where he now sets, and twice he set where he now rises.”
Furthermore, from the Bible:
“From a far away land they came, from the end-point of Heaven do the Lord and his weapons of wrath come to destroy the whole Earth. Therefore will I agitate the Heaven and Earth shall be shaken out of its place. When the Lord of Hosts shall be crossing, the day of his burning wrath.” (Isaiah 13:1).
As explained by Sitchin, Nibiru (referred to as “the twelfth planet” since as Sitchin claimed, the Sumerians’ gods-given interpretation of the Solar System counted all eight planets, plus Pluto, the Sun, and the Moon) was the home of a technologically advanced extraterrestrial race called the Anunnaki in Sumerian myth, who Sitchin states are called the Nephilims in the Bible (Genesis).
Sitchin wrote that they evolved after Nibiru entered our star system, and they first came to Earth some 450,000 years ago looking for minerals, specifically gold, which they found and mined in Africa. Sitchin states that these “gods” were the rank-and-file workers of the colonial expedition to Earth from planet Nibiru.
